Tis the season for colds, sinus infections, flu and other glorious bacteria that seemingly won’t go away. My girls have been sick with colds, croup, runny noses, and coughs that also won’t go away. Thankfully my kids have NEVER had ear infections…NEVER. I count my blessings on this. I have friends whose kids have been suffering ear infections for wks now. I feel so badly for them. I HATE getting them and man do they hurt! I told a friend last week that my kids have NEVER gotten one and how I am so thankful. Blah blah blah…
THIS MORNING:

My 2 yr old kept me up all night long with fever and complaining that her left ear hurt. She fell asleep on the couch this morning (pic above) and whimpered the whole time in her sleep. Bless. I am not familiar with kids with ear infections…but I sure as heck know that I will NEVER say NEVER again!!
Any advice??

Applying something warm to her ear might help temporarily relieve the pain, but I don’t know of anything else that will help other than antibiotics.
When my 2 yr old was a baby she had an ear infection and had so much fluid build up it busted her ear drum and all this nasty stuff came out of her ear. I didn’t know she even had an ear infection until she started screaming non-stop and we took her to the ER because we didn’t know what was wrong with her. The doctor said that when there is so much fluid build-up, it can cause too much pressure but once it bursts, the fluid is released out of the ear canal and there is relief. (That’s why she stopped crying by the time we got to the ER).
She had to be treated with extra medication to help her ear heal up after that though. Ear infections are never fun!
I just found this online. Couldn’t hurt to try it out!
take a clean long sock, most likely a mens sock, put about a cup of rice in the sock and heat it in the microwave for about a min. then put it on the ear that is hurting and take some pain med. not only does this take away the pressure causing the pain but if you do this often enough it will drain the build up in your ear
Another comment on the website I found. I actually found this stuff at GNC.
There is an ‘ear oil’ called Wally’s Famous Ear oil…a blend of all those ingredients plus more. It has saved my two little ones from getting ear infections. I’ve used it too. Best to do all this stuff BEFORE it gets to the aching part. When you get a sinus infection…start putting Wally’s in your ears. It helps the fluid drain and reduces infection in any fluid that does build up. We have Wally’s on hand always.

Just be careful because it’s possible some home remedies may not be safe for your little girl!
People take antibiotics all the time when they’re not appropriate, and this causes all kinds of problems. It’s one of my “soapbox” issues.
But this is DEFINITELY NOT one of those cases. There is a risk of permanent hearing loss without treatment, and the pain will go away pretty much immediately after she starts taking the meds.
Get thee to a doctor, mom!
For temporary relief, you can get some numbing ear drops from the drugstore. Man…that was cheesey. Oh, well…Use as directed!
THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE. I HAVE BEEN ROTATING MOTRIN AND TYLENOL EVERY 2 HRS FOR THE FEVER PART. SHE WON”T LET ME GET NEAR HER EAR THOUGH…WE’LL SEE IF THE WARMING THING WORKS. WHAT ABOUT A HEATING PAD??
KEEP THE ADVICE COMING!!
Heating pad should help relieve some of the pain! I just hope it doesn’t get worse!
Poor baby girl! I am praying for you and your little darling!
i heard the rice thing the other day. Zack’s teacher was saying that it worked. It only relieves the pain though. I think you still have to do something for the infection.
I HAVEN’T TRIED ANYTHING YET. SHE ACTUALLY WOKE UP FROM HER NAP AND IS PLAYING!! YAY!! SHE IS STILL RUNNING FEVER THOUGH AND I KNOW HER EAR STILL HURTS. AFTER DINNER, WHEN THINGS WIND DOWN, I WILL PROBABLY BE ABLE TO GET THE HEATED RICE OR THE HEATING PAD NEAR HER EAR!!
THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE!!!
ok here is an OLD remedy passed down for generations…. It works, I have done it for myself…. Vicks Vapor rub, scoop a small amount on a spoon heat it over a candle until the Vicks becomes liquid. It will be HOT, then tear a small piece of a cotton ball off {to fit in ear} drop it on the liquid Vicks so that it is absobed… Now, let it cool, but when it’s still warm place in ear…. ahhhh so soothing….
